Hey, bookworms! Today I decided to do something a bit different and do a book review that is structured a bit differently. We’re going to be discussing 10 Thoughts I Had While Reading Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner!

10 Thoughts I Had While Reading

10 thoughts i had while reading

1. First chapter and it was already hot and heavy!!!

This book definitely hooks you from the very beginning and it starts off with a hot and heavy scene of Cassie hooking up with an older woman in a bar! Little does she know, it’s her friend’s mom who’s visiting her at college and this is where our story begins!

2. I really liked Cassie’s attitude from the start and liked how related and flawed she was

Meryl Wilsner does a great job of introducing Cassie’s character to us. She reminded me a lot of Delilah Green from Delilah Green Doesn’t Care because she doesn’t have a great relationship with her family, and she seems to have a very carefree attitude about things, but she’s smart and clever.

3. Even though it says best friend’s mom on the cover I was shocked by their age difference

I don’t know why I was so shocked because Cassie is a senior in college and Parker (her friend) is a freshman in college, so clearly the woman she hooked up with would be at least like 16 years old or something, but she’s 20 years older! Wild!

4. Parker was kind of annoying until the very end and even then she kinda was

As we get to know Parker, she seems very devoted to her friendships with Cassie and their other friend, Acacia, however, she does also seem passive-aggressive, whiney, and suspect at times! Because she’s 3 years younger than Cassie you can tell she’s slightly less mature and acts like a child, especially when it comes to her mom and her relationship. However, I can’t blame her as she’s only 17-18 years old, and as we reach the end of the book she is surprisingly more understanding, but still whiney and typical Parker.

5. I don’t think it was that bad that Cassie and Erin snuck around behind Parker’s back…let me explain!!!

Throughout the story, Cassie and Erin had to sneak around behind Parker’s back a lot to avoid the confrontation that Parker’s best friend and mom are hooking up. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t think it was that bad of Cassie to do this because she and Parker, while considered “best friends” to Parker, have only been friends for a couple of months and the initial hook-up and chemistry was discovered before they knew Erin was Parker’s mom.

6. It took me a while to understand Erin’s decision-making as a mother

I definitely felt a little uncomfortable at times with Erin’s decisions as a mother. She was recently divorced which has impacted her relationship with Parker, and deciding to hide her relationship with Cassie definitely seemed risky for her relationship with her daughter. However, as time went on I did respect her decisions to do what was going to make her most happy because she was so unhappy in her previous relationship.

7. It was so out of pocket that Erin said okay for Cassie to visit for 2 weeks over Christmas break!!!

This part was probably one of the main reasons I didn’t like the book honestly! It just felt so out of pocket and weird that Erin would allow herself to see Cassie again. It definitely felt like the author added this in just to make the plot work, but I almost feel like it would’ve been better just to have Erin and Parker be from where their college was as opposed to Erin paying for a ticket to get Cassie across the country lol!

8. There was a strap-on scene which was very shocking and new to me!!!

Need I say more???

9. I loved seeing Cassie go through the emotions and decisions of what her true dreams are in life

This was definitely one of my favorite parts of the story, aside from the smut! As Cassie was approaching graduation, I loved getting to see her reevaluate what’s most important to her in life and seeing her path and dreams change to consider others in her life! Since she didn’t grow up with the most loving family, I really liked how she didn’t end up distancing herself more from the people who care for her most, such as Acacia, Erin, and Parker!

10. I was NOT expecting them to work out in the end

While I guess this is usually given in books, I just felt like all the odds were against them until the plot twist at the very end. People were much more accepting of their relationship than they thought and the main message of this story is, “Fuck should” and just do what makes you happy in life! It was definitely interesting seeing two very different phases of life come together in a serious relationship, but I loved it!

Closing Statements

So those are the main 10 thoughts I had while reading Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner! Overall I gave this book a 4/5 star rating, because there were definitely a few things that rubbed me the wrong way (no pun intended), but it still had a really well done plot and the characters were definitely well thought out too! I guess we can’t forget about the smut in this book which was definitely a 5/5 for me! If you’re looking for a spicy sapphic romance with an age gap, as well as a good story aside from the romance, then I’d highly recommend reading this!
